Coastal Management strategies already implemented...
Already there are many coastal management strategies implemented on the Wollongong Harbour Precinct to prevent or reduce the geographical processes that have a negative effect on the coast. One of these is the breakwaters which are located on the boarders of the harbour to prevent or reduce rough waves impacting on shipping. These breakwaters however, help long-shore drift to create a sand build up on one side of the breakwater. This leads to another coastal management strategy already implemented called beach nourishment or dredging. This is the gathering up of bottom sediments and disposing of them at a different location. This technique is often used to keep waterways navigable. Basically, dredging or beach nourishment is the process of taking sand from one location to another to rebuild a beach.
A sea wall is another coastal management strategy already implemented in the Wollongong Harbour Precinct. A sea walls purpose is to prevent the eroding of a land area and it is put in places that are at risk of erosion.
Another coastal management strategy already implemented is the fences around sand dunes; one of the three coastal dune preservation techniques. These fences help to prevent animals and humans from walking on and damaging the vegetation growing on the sand dunes. A last strategy that has a similar job to the fences; is signage. Signage warns and informs people, not animals, about the importance of the vegetation on the sand dunes and states rules of how to treat it; for example, do not walk upon the vegetation.
